Trump’s Tariffs Add to Chaotic Second Term

Newly Signed Executive Orders Impose Tariffs That Will Raise Prices on Essentials, Hitting Working Families Hardest

Today, President Trump implemented tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China as he had long promised on the campaign trail. Among the many goods affected will be everyday items such as household appliances, clothing and shoes, groceries, and pharmaceuticals.

“President Trump would have his supporters believe these tariffs are designed to hold these countries accountable, though it’s not clear for what,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “However, those familiar with elementary economics know these are just another way to tax working Virginians just trying to get by, and costs will instead be passed along to American consumers. So many living on fixed incomes, including our veterans, will especially be impacted by these rising costs. Representative Kiggans has the opportunity to stand with her constituents and oppose Trump’s tariffs that only serve to pad his billionaire friends’ pockets.”
