Representative Kiggans Signs on to Do-Nothing Letter in Attempt to Placate Constituents
Virginia Beach, VA – This week, a delegation of congressional Republicans, including Rep. Kiggans, issued a letter to House Republican leadership urging them to save Medicaid. This comes after Congress took a vote last week, in which each signatory voted for a budget that would gut the program by upwards of $880 billion, and cut over $1.5 trillion overall from the budget. As DOGE continues to cause chaos throughout the Commonwealth, legislators lack the courage to stand up to this administration.
“Similar to the letter Representative Kiggans sent to Secretary Hegseth asking him to spare veterans employed by the Department of Defense, this letter is just lip service to constituents who are at risk of losing their only path to healthcare,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “We know that thousands of Virginians, especially those who live in rural areas, including the Eastern Shore, will be hit hardest if this budget is enacted. Rural hospitals depend on Medicaid to stay open. The families do not have the luxury of choosing between hospitals or driving hours for care. These hospitals are a lifeline for underserved communities. If Rep. Kiggans were serious about protecting Medicaid, she would oppose the Republican plan to cut programs like Medicaid to fund more tax breaks for billionaires.”
