Impending Cuts to Social Security Threaten Seniors’ Livelihoods
Rep. Kiggans Stays Silent as Billionaire Secretary Accuses Seniors of Fraud for Having Concerns
Virginia Beach, VA – Last week, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik accused anyone who complains about a missed Social Security check of being a “fraudster.” Over 117,000 seniors in VA-02 rely on Social Security for their livelihood in retirement, and missing a single check could mean the difference between keeping the lights on and food on the table or not. Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts will reduce accessibility for seniors across the Hampton Roads region, especially those with limited mobility or without internet access.
“Commerce Secretary Lutnik is completely detached from reality,” said Meta Moore of Virginia Beach. “The average senior who has paid into Social Security all of their working life does not have the privilege of waiting until next month. There are thousands of Virginians who live on a fixed income and rely on their monthly check to pay their utilities, buy groceries, and rarely have anything left over. Meanwhile, our own elected official, Rep. Jen Kiggans, is nowhere to be found. This past week at a town hall, we heard from numerous constituents who are already feeling the impact of DOGE’s cuts and mismanagement supported by this administration, and Rep. Kiggans through her vote for the continuing resolution earlier this month. Representative Jen Kiggans must stand up for her constituents whose livelihoods are threatened by these dangerous cuts.”
