Affordable Virginia Delivers for Local Families Just in Time for the Holidays
Virginia Beach – This weekend, Affordable Virginia delivered gifts and winter necessities as part of the ForKids Inc. holiday collection and were able to meet the needs of a dozen families in Hampton Roads. We checked off their Christmas wish lists and made sure they had what they needed to stay warm as the temperatures drop.
“We are proud to support ForKids, an incredible organization that does so much for families struggling with homelessness,” said Affordable Virginia Campaign Director, Emily Yeatts. “Each year, many families in our region rely on the generosity of neighbors and organizations to help give their children a memorable holiday. This year we were happy to help these families, but know that this isn’t the only time of year when families need support. Virginia families need support all year to keep their lights on and food on the table. As we look forward to 2025, we will continue to urge our elected leaders to support policies that will lighten the load for working families, not the ultra-wealthy. We need to lower the cost of groceries, address price gouging, and excessive corporate greed to ensure working people can continue to support their families year-round.”
Working families in Hampton Roads will continue to struggle if their needs continue to go unmet:
Hampton Roads has a poverty rate 50% higher than the state average at 15%.
Over 900,000 Virginia families are cost-burdened by unaffordable housing.
Despite more units being built, property assessments in Virginia Beach continue to go up.
